i'm in desperate need of a day off, but couldn't really take any time this week because of the prep for this week's trip. so, what do I get?

the main water supply to our house is frozen solid.

the problem, as far as we can tell, is outside the foundation, underneath our (concrete) stoop. completely inaccessible. find out from a neighbor last night that the area under the concrete is apparently completely hollow, and the only way to prevent this from happening in the future would likely be to dig up the concrete and fill the whole thing in.

right now, i'm waiting for the nice man from the borough water department to come out and verify that yes, there's nothing to be done. (he was out on a lot of these calls yesterday.)

for right now, it appears that the only thing to be done is to keep the taps open (we have NO water - not even a trickle), and wait for temperatures above freezing, which we're not expected to hit until next week.

this is not the day off i wanted.

is there anyway to get a heat source there?

the problem is that the frozen pipe is completely under the porch, outside of the foundation, completely inaccessible without jackhammering the concrete. the pipes that we can heat/wrap are all fine. mer spent 45 minues with a hairdryer heating the pipe where it comes in the wall, but it unfortunately did nothing.

i wish it was as simple as heating... :)

Hey you two! You are welcome to my home for water services ANY time...just let me know when/if you need it. Well do I remember the days of having no water...back when we lived in the farmhouse. It sucked. :)

thanks hon!

the guy from the borough was out, and other than agreeing with our neighbor's recommendation to rip up the porch, he recommended heat tape. hopefully that will work - otherwise you may be hearing from me this afternoon!

My mom suggested continuing to heat the the pipe as best you are able....blowdryers, etc. Otherwise, we'll be happy to see you!

Ugh! I'd offer you my place (I actually have two showers in my apartment, too) but I don't suppose it would be terribly helpful to have to drive 45 minutes into the City for a friggin' shower. :-/
