No cookies this year, but cards galore...comments are screened, so please post your snail-mail address here (or email me) so that we can send holiday goodness your way.
daniwithtea: (cue the porn jazz)
I have this strange love of sending out holiday cards. So, I need addresses. Please note that I seem to have lost a bunch of the addresses I mailed to last year...so I probably need your address.

daniwithtea: (she feels everything)
With all my focus on "November! November!", I almost forgot that today is Samhain. I had some things I'd put off last year and the year before...maybe I put it off, or maybe the time just wasn't right until now. Maybe I just wasn't ready. Tonight, I lit a candle, got myself a bucket of water, and brought out The Box. The Box has been sitting in my closet for over two years now. It moved from Green Lane to Downingtown with me. In a lot of ways, it moved farther than that. The Box held remnants of my last relationship, pre-Mer, pre-hospital, pre-meds. It held notes, a grocery list, a t-shirt, some stickers, hard copies of emails, and other various detritus that accumulated during that particular two years in my life. They were my first female lovers, my intro to bdsm, a two-year whirlwind of love and anger and sex and tears and....just a lot. Things I've been holding on to, not just physically.

So tonight, in true "Dani celebrates a holiday" fashion, I set it on fire.

I remembered the good and the bad. I gave thanks for everything I learned, and for all the love that was there. I went over each piece of that life and the memories that went with it. And as I watched it burn, I let it all go with the smoke.

I read a blessing from my Celtic Devotional, and read my personal Samhain piece, which was (rather ironically) originally written for what became our last Samhain together. Then I asked Mer to come in, and I re-read a shorter version of that same Samhain piece. I blew out the candle, we dumped the water and ashes into The Box on top of everything that couldn't safely be burned, and Mer took it out of the house for me.

I have a headache (I always do after ritual), and I can feel the irritation in my lungs from all the smoke, but it's done, and I feel good.

For those who celebrate, and those who don't - Blessed Samhain. )
daniwithtea: (magic)
What time? Time for Dani to go postal in the holiday sense, by shipping random holiday items to various locations:
- cards!
- cookies and baked goods! (better-packed than last year, I promise)
- cordials! (anyone know the laws of shipping booze across state lines?)
- soaps!
- teas!
- tiaras!
- flannel ornaments!
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle sleeping bags!
- whatever else Mer and I want to send you!

So, I need addresses. I believe I still have everyone's from last year, but in case I don't, please send/post them anyway. I've screened comments to this post, so you can respond here, or email the info to flannelbutch at gmail dot com.

*yes, I realize it's only October, but it's the calm before the storm at work right now, so I wanted to post this while I could.
daniwithtea: (joss whedon is my master now)
i'm too tired (again) to talk about Serenity, especailly since we just finished putting up 22 quarts of cordials/liqueurs (chocolate, chocolate mint, coffee, grand marnier, cardamom vanilla, currant, apricot, blackberry sage, herbal tea, vanilla, maraschino cherry, anise, chipotle, amaretto, and cranberry spice) for yule gifts.

however, i just checked out last night's box office figures. flightplan was #1 at $4.4 mil, and serenity was #2 at $4.2 mil. we didn't get out to see it again tonight, but we are going tomorrow.

Here's hoping for Alliance Strikes Back... er, I mean Serenity II in theaters soon.
daniwithtea: (i aim to misbehave)
thanks to [livejournal.com profile] trinapink, [livejournal.com profile] juergen, [livejournal.com profile] arcadian72, [livejournal.com profile] hhholiday, and [livejournal.com profile] darkest_mind for all the tea and soap advice. I figred it'd be easier just to respond to you all here.

--> if I do end up making soaps, I'll definitely go the hand-milled route. I've got little time to devote to this as it is, and I don't want to be playing with lye if I'm hurried. Plus, too many Fight Club flashbacks. ;)
--> [livejournal.com profile] trinapink, I'll definitely send you an email with more questions about soaps, etc.
--> [livejournal.com profile] hhholiday - any ideas on where I can find small quantities of things like jasmine flowers, etc. to mix into green tea? I've seen some vendors online, but I just don't need a pound of each ingredient.
--> [livejournal.com profile] trinapink, I generally do a mailing of some kind to everyone we know - last year was cards and/or cookies - so you *are* on our list :)
--> [livejournal.com profile] darkest_mind - as far as the cost component, I'm not worried about molds (I'm thinking sliced loaves), and I'd only do three different kinds at most, so I'm not too worried about scents/colors, either. If I can find the soap base at a good enough price, do you think it would be fairly cost-effective?

I'm trying to gauge what would be best-received, when deciding between teas and soaps. It also depends on ingredients - for example, if I end up having to buy a pound of every single tea ingredient because I can't find them in smaller quantities, then that's probably out.

Ok, time to assemble my brown boots, brown coat, and "Joss Whedon is my Master Now" t-shirt, and head out to meet Mer at the theater for the 7:20 show. Time to take back the sky.

*Serenity fan squee!!!*
daniwithtea: (i have nothing in my head)
okay, so we're trying to get crafty (read: cheap) for the family holiday gifts. we're doing cordials/liqueurs for the drinkers (in dollar-store bottles), and I'm thinking homemade bulk teas (with dollar-store mug and strainer) for the non-drinkers. It wasn't until I started thinking about this that I realized how long it's been since I played with herbs outside of cooking. I know one flavor I want to do is blackberry sage, and I pretty much just need freeze-dried blackberries, bulk black tea leaves, and dried sage for that. but i'm running low on ideas for other flavors. i'd like one black (the blackberry sage), one green, one herbal, and something else. Help??? I'd like somthing a little more interesting than "here's some chamomile in a jar. it's chamomile tea." i also need good sources for the ingredients....oh, i'm a mess.

i've also thought about making soaps. anyone know anything about soap-making?

in the past, i've done hand-painted wine glasses, hand-made candles, and last year was quilts all around, so i'm running a little low on options. any other crafty ideas are very, very welcome.

ETA: ooh, i just had a good idea for a mixed basket, something my ex used to drink: earl grey tea with earl grey liqueur. hmmm...i can use my coffee liqueur recipe and substitute brewed earl grey for the coffee...oh, yum.

ETA Again: I've also done homemade chocolates.
