thanks to [livejournal.com profile] trinapink, [livejournal.com profile] juergen, [livejournal.com profile] arcadian72, [livejournal.com profile] hhholiday, and [livejournal.com profile] darkest_mind for all the tea and soap advice. I figred it'd be easier just to respond to you all here.

--> if I do end up making soaps, I'll definitely go the hand-milled route. I've got little time to devote to this as it is, and I don't want to be playing with lye if I'm hurried. Plus, too many Fight Club flashbacks. ;)
--> [livejournal.com profile] trinapink, I'll definitely send you an email with more questions about soaps, etc.
--> [livejournal.com profile] hhholiday - any ideas on where I can find small quantities of things like jasmine flowers, etc. to mix into green tea? I've seen some vendors online, but I just don't need a pound of each ingredient.
--> [livejournal.com profile] trinapink, I generally do a mailing of some kind to everyone we know - last year was cards and/or cookies - so you *are* on our list :)
--> [livejournal.com profile] darkest_mind - as far as the cost component, I'm not worried about molds (I'm thinking sliced loaves), and I'd only do three different kinds at most, so I'm not too worried about scents/colors, either. If I can find the soap base at a good enough price, do you think it would be fairly cost-effective?

I'm trying to gauge what would be best-received, when deciding between teas and soaps. It also depends on ingredients - for example, if I end up having to buy a pound of every single tea ingredient because I can't find them in smaller quantities, then that's probably out.

Ok, time to assemble my brown boots, brown coat, and "Joss Whedon is my Master Now" t-shirt, and head out to meet Mer at the theater for the 7:20 show. Time to take back the sky.

My friend makes soaps in Pringle containers. Empties them out (the yummy part), cleans them and pours the soap in. Peels it off later (maybe cuts first I'm not sure). almost like a mold without the cost.

that is a fabulous idea!

I have several non-stick small loaf pans, which I figured I could use, but I really like the idea of being able to do a different "loaf" shape, and that would be perfect.

Not cheap but reusable, what about shaped muffin-esque pans? I know they have a proper name but don't know what it is. They look like mini bunt loaves or Victorian style gel molds but six in a single pan like muffins...

ooh, great idea. i actually have a whole bunch of miniature fluted tart tins, barquette tins, and brioche molds that would make really neat-looking soaps.

Oh.. I envy you. I did however get my Firefly box set in the mail yesterday so I can watch every episode until my head explodes. Hubby left on his yearly "guys trip" to the beach right in time for the damn opening of Serenity.. so now I have to WAIT for a WEEK to see it.

Do let us know how the movie is.. I'm dying to see it.

We have two good and reasonably priced health food stores that have a decent assortment of herbs here in Easton. Also, before you buy anything, gimme a call: We have, for example, about a pound of jasmine flowers left from when we tried to sell the stuff. Also roses, lavender... a whole bunch of stuff that we are more than willing to give away if you are willing to pick it up.
